Miller Reunion
THE MILLER FAMILY
A Brief History
David Miller was born in Pennsylvania in 1812 or 1817 from parents who were born in the USA.
His parents probably came from Berks or Northumberland County, PA. His father was possibly named Jacob. A search of early church records might provide the answer. Schuylkill County was not formed until 1811. David Miller was listed as a laborer by the census reports. Little is known of his wife, other than her name and that she came from around Shamokin, PA.
David Metz was born in 1814 or 1815. His grandfather was a German mercenary brought to this country by the British during the Revolutionary War. The grandfather remained in the USA after the War and married a mennonite girl. The white head coverings worn by the mennonite women remained in the family through Anne Permelia Metz. David Metz was listed as a mason in the census. It was said that he ran the company store in Mahanoy City where Samuel Miller met Anne Metz. Nancy Anne Mathewson, David Metz wife, was born in Wales, England in 1817 or 1818. It is said that there was a title and money in the chancellery, in England, for her, but she never claimed the title.
Samuel Stephen Miller was born in 1852. Anne Permelia Metz was born in 1856. Sam Miller was a timberman in the coal mines at Mahanoy City, Lost Creek and Mt. Carmel. When the family moved to Pittsburgh in 1898, he went to work in the steel mill. He worked in the steel mill until 1903 when he was killed at the blast furnace.
